First off, let me say they I started writing these things to stretch myself a bit, listen to things I normally wouldn’t pick up, and try to eliminate my own biases. My experience with Doom is highly limited, and more or less associated with dudes who post a lot of memes and get high all day.
That being said, “Pasung” is a damned solid release. Sludgy, nuanced and ominous, it’s everything I would want to hear in order to want to explore the genre some more. The themes are par for the course, with nihilism, bleakness, and all the other things that probably pack the clubs in Seattle, but the album is a bit more than that.
Touches of Sludge and Black Metal to sort of break the monotony of repetition that defines the genre, this requires more than one listen, and more attention and probably a dark room, where you can lie down on the floor and shut off your electronic devices, pondering all the things and events that had brought you there. Really. I consider that an accomplishment, and I recommend you do what I had just described.
